Tadoussac is a port town in Quebec (Canada), located in a bay at the confluence of two rivers (Saguenay and St Lawrence). The small town has population under 1,000. The closest city is Saguenay, approx 100 km (62 mi) west.
Tadoussac is the northeast terminus of Baie-Ste-Catherine-Tadoussac ferry route, offering free and regularly scheduled service across Saguenay River. The ferry is a portion of Quebec Route 138 and main link to Sept-Iles.
The indigenous Innu named the place Totouskak (bosom), probably because of the two round and sandy hills on the west side of the settlement. Though situated in Innu territory, it was also frequented by Micmac (First Nations indigenous people) in the 16th century's 2nd half.
Tadoussac was discovered by the Europeans in 1535. The town was founded in 1600 when Canada's first trading post was formed here, in addition to the permanent settlement (in the area of current Grand Hotel).
The cold freshwater of Saguenay River and warmer, salty water of St Lawrence River meet here and create a diverse marine ecosystem. The rivers support an abundance of krill, making the region attractive to whales.
The town is a popular tourist travel destination attracting travelers with the rugged scenery of Saguenay Fjord and its whale watching facilities. The entire region is either rural or wilderness, with a few natural parks protecting local resources. The village encompasses Canada's first marine national park. Major tourism attractions in Tadoussac include Old Chapel, CIMM (Center of Marine Mammal Interpretation), Pierre Chauvin Trading Post, whale watching excursions (Saguenay–St Lawrence Marine Park).
