Takamatsu (Takamatsu-shi) is a port city located in Japan's Kagawa Prefecture (Shikoku Island), one of Japan's core cities and Shikoku's largest by population (around 420,000, metro around 840,000). The port is on Seto Sea (aka Setouchi) and is the closest Shikoku port to Honshu Island.
The ity's main tourist attractions include Ritsurin Garden (especially during spring and autumn / cherry blossoms and fall foliage), Takamatsu Castle, Shikoku Mura (open-air museum), Yashima-ji (Shingon temple, pilgrimage site). From Takamatsu can be accessed various islands in Seto Sea, the largest of which are Megijima, Ogijima, Naoshima, Teshima, Shodoshima. Setouchi Triennale is an island art festival (held every 3 years on different Setouchi islands, also in Takamatsu and Tamano) with outdoor exhibitions by prominent international artists.
Among the largest companies headquartered in the city are JR Shikoku (railway company, intercity and local services on the island), Tadano Ltd (Japan's largest crane manufacturer), Shikoku Shimbun (news media), Asiana Airlines (South Korea).
Takamatsu Airport is a small airport (approx 15 km / 9 ml to the southwest) serving mainly domestic flights. Takamatsu Train Station connects to Okayama Station (Honshu Island) via Seto-Ohashi Bridge. City trams, Kotoden trains and buses are the main means of local transportation. Long-distance buses connect to Osaka-Kyoto, Tokyo, Hiroshima.
