Taveuni Island Fiji

Taveuni Island is Fiji's 3rd-largest - after Vanua Levu and Viti Levu. It covers a total area of approx 434 km2 (168 ml2) and has population around 9,000. Island's population is 2/3 indigenous Fijians, and concentrated mostly on the sheltered western side. Taveuni has 8 major villages, with administrative centre Waiyevo (central-western coast). The largest urban area comprises two villages (Naqara and Somosomo).

• The cigar-shaped isle is located approx 7 km (4 ml) across Somosomo Strait - to the east of Vanua Levu. Taveuni is part of Fiji's Cakaudrove province (Northern Division) and belongs to Vanua Levu Group of islands.
• Bouma Forest Park was founded in 1990 after landowning clans were concerned by threat of logging. Following an expansion, the reserve now covers roughly 30% of the island.
• In January 2003, the island was crossed by Cyclone Ami. In January 2008, Cyclone Gene also caused severe damages. In March 2010, Taveuni was hit by Cyclone Tomas. Storm's eye passed within 30 km (19 ml) of the island and produced a tidal surge with high waves.
• Taveuni Island features abundant flora and is a popular tourist destination offering great diving opportunities, bushwalks, waterfalls, abundant bird life. Island's central parts receive high rainfall amounts. Soils are volcanic in origin and support island's most significant industry - agriculture.
