Toamasina (aka Tamatave) is Madagascar's main seaport and the capital city of Atsinanana region. It is located on Madagascar Island's east coast (Indian Ocean). Tamatave is approx 215 km (134 ml) northeast of Antananarivo (aka Tana) - country's capital and largest city (population over 1,5 million).

Toamasina has population around 275,000 and is served by Toamasina Airport, with connections provided to Saint-Denis Reunion (by Air Austral) and to Antananarivo and Sainte-Marie (by Air Madagascar).

Tamatave's coral reef forms a large harbour accessible via two openings. The city features wide avenues (beautifully lined with palm trees), numerous hotels, restaurants, beautiful beaches. However, sharks and sea pollution often prevent watersports and swimming. Bazary Be is a street market with local merchants selling exotic spices and hand-made merchandise (including souvenirs).
