Toyama (Toyama-shi) is the principal port and the capital city of Japan's Toyama Prefecture, with population around 420,000. Toyama is on the coast of Sea of Japan (Chubu region, central Honshu Island), approx 200 km (120 mi) north of Nagoya and approx 300 km (190 mi) northwest of Tokyo.

Port Toyama (locode JPTOY) serves cargo ships and ferries. Popular tourist attractions in Toyama include Gohyaku Rakan (temple with 500 statues), Botanic Gardens, Castle, International Conference Center, Modern Art Museum, Glass Studio, Recreation Park Stadium.

Historically, the town was the capital of Etchu Province and received city status in 1889. The city is served by Toyama Airport as well as by Toyama Station (West Japan Railway Company) via Toyama Light Rail and Toyama Chiho Railway. Hokuriku Electric Power Company (Chubu's largest power-supplier) is based in Toyama. Nachi-Fujikoshi (industrial robotics company) and INTEC (software company) are also have headquartered in the city.

Toyama Band of musical sandwichmen contest (Toyama Chindon Contest) is held annually (early April). This event is a very popular festival, and many bands (wearing advertisements' sandwich boards) participate, attracting numerous domestic tourists.
