Trier (aka Treves) is a Moselle River cruise port and city in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state (Urban district). Trier is located in Moselle wine region and close to the Germany-Luxembourg border. By population (around 115,000), Trier is ranked state's 4th largest city (after Koblenz, Mainz, Ludwigshafen). The nearest cities are Luxembourg (50 km / 31 mi southwest), Saarbrucken (80 km / 50 mi southeast) and Koblenz (100 km / 60 mi northeast).

The town (as Treuorum) was established by Celts in the late-4th century BC, In the late-1st century BC it was later conquered by the Roman Empire and renamed Augusta Treverorum. This makes Trier one of Germany's oldest cities (if not the oldest).

Trier's main tourist attractions include Porta Nigra (one of the best-preserved Roman city gates), Constantine Basilica  (Protestant church), Roman Amphitheater, Romerbrucke (Roman bridge over Moselle, one of the oldest still serving car traffic), Roman baths ruins, Trierer Dom (cathedral), Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), St Matthias' Abbey (active monastery), St Gangolf's Church, St Paulinus' Church, several museums (archaeological, ethnological, religious art, Roman artifacts, Karl Marx House, Toy Museum, mine museum).
