Tristan da Cunha Island (Tristan) is an UK territory located in southern Atlantic Ocean. This round-shaped island has total area approx 98 km2 (38 ml2), diameter 11 km (7 ml) and population under 500. Tristan da Cunha is located approx 3700 km (2300 ml) to the south of UK's other overseas territory Saint Helena (nearest inhabited island) and approx 2400 km (1500 ml) from South Africa (nearest continental mainland). The distance to South America is 3360 km (2090 ml).
The territory consists of the main island (Tristan da Cunha), plus the uninhabited Nightingale Island and the wildlife reserves Gough island and Inaccessible Island (just 45 km / 28 ml to southwest). The other islands, except Tristan, are uninhabited, not counting the personnel of the weather station on Gough Island. Saint Helena is UK's second-oldest dependency (overseas territory) - after Bermuda.
Like Saint Helena Island, Tristan is allowed to issue its own postage stamps - an enterprise providing a significant income. Islands' distant location makes transportat connections to the outside world rare and quite difficult. Lacking an airport, Tristan Island can be reached only by sea. Fishing boats from South Africa serve these islands 8 or 9 times per year. RMS Saint Helena (cargo and passenger cruiseferry) used to link Tristan with Saint Helena Island and South Africa once per year (during a January voyage), but the service was discontinued in 2018.
