Trois-Rivieres is a port city in Quebec Canada, located at the confluence of Saint Lawrence and Saint-Maurice Rivers, on the north bank of St Lawrence River (across from Becancour City). The city covers a total area of approx 334 km2 (129 ml2) and has population around 132,000 (metro around 152,000).
Port Trois-Rivieres is one of all 9 St Lawrence cruise ports of call - together with Quebec City, Montreal, Saguenay, Baie-Comeau, Sept-eles, Gaspe, Havre-Saint-Pierre and Magdalen Islands.
- Trois-Rivieres is part of the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor which is densely populated and is approx halfway between Quebec City and Montreal. Trois-Rivieres is the economic and cultural hub of Mauricie region. It was founded as a settlement on July 4, 1634, the 2nd permanent in New France, following Quebec City in 1608.
- The name of the city, which is French for "three rivers", was chosen due to the fact that Saint-Maurice River (divided by 2 small islands at its opening) has 3 mouths at Saint Lawrence River. Traditionally, the city of Trois-Rivieres was referred to as Three Rivers in English, although in recent decades it's been referred to as Trois-Rivieres in both French and English. The anglicized name appears in many city areas (e.g. Three Rivers Academy), and bears witness to the impact of English settlers on the town. The inhabitants of Trois-Rivieres are known as Trifluvians or Trifluviens.
- Trois-Rivieres is also the name of the territory which is equivalent to the regional county municipality of Quebec, coextensive with Trois-Rivieres city. Together with the regional municipality of Les Chenaux, it makes the census division of Francheville. Trois-Rivieres is the seat of judicial district of the same name. The metropolitan area also includes Becancour city which lies on the south shore of St.Lawrence River across Laviolette Bridge.
