Turnu Magurele is a Danube River cruise port and town in Romania (Teleorman County, Wallachia region) with a population of around 23,000. Port Turnu is located approx 4 km (2,5 mi) northeast of the confluence of two rivers (Danube and Olt) and across Nikopol (Bulgaria).
Since 2010, regular daily scheduled ferries connect Turnu with Nikopol providing passengers and car transportation across the Danube. Current-day city's economy is largely based on the large factories MTM (textiles), SC DONAU CHEM (chemical/fertilizer plant owned by INTERAGRO Group), SC Bega Electroturris (electrical equipment manufacturer), ElectroTurris (electrical engine manufacturer), ConservTurris (food-processing plant owned by SC Mobila), SCMopan (milling and bakery). Best-known tourist attractions include St Haralambos Cathedral (early-20th-century Orthodox church in downtown), Cetatea Turnu (Medieval fortress ruins, approx 3 km from downtown).
The settlement was founded by the Romanians and developed as a fortified port town during the Byzantine Empire (330-1453 AD). In 1417 AD, it became part of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1919) and renamed to Kule. During the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78), Turnu served as a base for Russia's military campaign in Bulgaria as Romanian forces were fighting on the Russian side.
As a cruise port, Turnu Magurele is included in the regular schedule of one of Europe's largest river cruise companies - Phoenix Reisen - with the ships Ariana (2012) and Aurelia (2007). Next tables show the ports sequence of the company's 14-day and 15-day "Grand Voyage" cruise tours roundtrip from homeport Passau. Prices start from ~USD 2500 per person (double occupancy porthole cabin rates).
