Tutrakan (Bulgaria)

Tutrakan is a Danube River cruise port and town in Bulgaria's Silistra Province, with a population of around 10,000. The town is located approx 58 km (36 mi) east of Ruse (Bulgaria's largest riverport) and approx 62 km (39 mi) west of Silistra (province's capital).

The settlement was founded in early-1st-century AD (during the Roman Empire / 27 BC - 1453 AD) as Transmarisca. By the 4th-century, it developed to one of Danube's largest strongholds. The Roman town and its fortress were destroyed in the early-7th-century. During the Bulgarian Empire (681-1422) the town was named Tutrakan and reemerged as a major military center until it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in late-14th-century. The town was liberated by Russian army forces during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). After the Second Balkan War (1913) between Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece, the entire Southern Dobruja (including Tutrakan) were incorporated into Romania - until the end of WW2 91939-1945) when was returned to Bulgaria. During WW1 (1914-1918), in the Battle of Tutrakan (September 2-6, 1916) the allied Bulgarian and German forces defeated the Romanian army.
