Umea is a port city and the capital of Sweden's Vasterbotten County (Norrland region), with population around 130,000. The city is at the mouth of Ume River, providing access to Bothnia Gulf. Sweden's capital city (Stockholm) is approx 600 km (370 mi) to the south.

Port Umea (locode SEUME) has a regularly scheduled daily ferry service (provided by Wasaline) linking to Vaasa Finland, with 11 weekly crossings (travel time 3,5 hours). Ferries and cruise ships dock at Holmsund Ferry Port (locode SEHLD). The town of Holmsund (population around 6,000) is approx 18 km (11 mi) to the south of Umea and serves as the city's principal port, so the Sweden-Finland ferry service is actually between Holmsund-Vaasa.

Wasaline's Vaasa-Umea service was inaugurated on January 3, 2013, with the 1981-built ship Wasa Express. Since September 2021, the route is served by the newbuild cruiseferry Aurora Botnia.

Umea is widely acknowledged as one of Sweden's top educational and research centers. At the 1965-opened Umea University are enrolled ~40,000 students (plus ~4200 employees) and it is the main economic factor for the city's population growth in the last decades. At Umea University was developed CRISPR gene editing (genetic engineering) which in 2020 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Two European highways pass through the city and connect it directly to Finland - E4 (ends in Tornio) and E12 (ends in Helsinki). Umea Airport is approx 4 km (2 mi) away. Regular domestic flights (operated by Scandinavian Airlines and Jonair) link the city with Stockholm, Ostersund and Kiruna. The airline Finnair offers regular flights to Helsinki.

Since 2010, the company Botniabanan AB (Bothnia Line) provides railway transportation between Umea and Hoga Kusten Airport (aka Kramfors) and via Ornskoldsvik to Stockholm. Botniabanan's higher-speed trains serve the 190 km (120 mi) railroad with speeds ~200 kph (120 mph). The route contains 140 bridges and a total of 25 km (16 mi) of tunnels. The train travel time to Stockholm is around 6,5 hours.
