Unst Island is among North Isles of Shetland Islands (Scotland). It has total area approx 120 km2 (46 mi2) and population under 1,000. Unst is the northernmost of all inhabited British Isles and the 3rd largest in Shetland (after Mainland and Yell).
Unst's scenery features grassland and coastal cliffs. Baltasound (herring fishing and ferry port) is its main village. It is also the location of the island's airport and leisure centre. Other impotant settlements and tourist attractions include Uyeasound (home to Hanseatic warehouse Greenwell's Booth), Muness Castle (built 16th century, sacked by pirates in 1627), Haroldswick (boat museum, heritage centre).
Ferries link Belmont (on Unst) with Oddsta (Fetlar Island) and Gutcher (Yell island). At Unst's southern end, above the ferry terminal, stands Belmont House. Dating back to 1775, this classical mansion was completely restored (between 1996-2010) by a Scottish charitable trust, which currently operates the building as venue for hire.
Unst Island is of great importance (and very popular among tourists) for its seabird colonies, including at Hermaness National Nature Reserve. It is also popular for the Shetland Mouse-ear (plant unique to the island). The commonly seen skua is known here as "bonxie".
