Vidin is a Danube River cruise port and town in northwestern Bulgaria, with population around 50,000. The town is located close to the borders with Serbia and Romania. A trade and agricultural centre, it has a fertile hinterland famous for its wines. Town's old name (Dunonia) translates from Celtic as "fortified hill".

Following the transition from communism to democracy (the fall of USSR), the whole region is still experiencing serious demographic and economic problems. Vidin is best known amoung tourists for its two well-preserved medieval fortresses (Kaleto and Baba Vida), 17th century Orthodox churches (St Pantaleimon, St Petka), Synagogue (late-19th century), Mosque and Library (late-18th century), Krastata Kazarma (18th century barracks), old Renaissance buildings, Bulgaria's first theater (built 1891).

Another popular tourist attraction in the area are Belogradchik (town famous for its unique rock formations and medieval fortress) and the nearby Magura Cave (with prehistoric paintings).
