Vientiane is a Mekong River cruise port and Laos' capital and largest city (population around 850,000) and also the country's administrative and economic center. The city is located on a Mekong's bend forming the Laos-Thailand border.

As a cruise port, Vientiane is included in the schedule of Pandaw Cruises - the largest company (by fleet) and a popular travel brand operating in Southeast Asia.

Vientiane is popular among tourists for its Buddhist temples and monuments, including Pha That Luang (gold-covered stupa in downtown), Haw Phra Kaew (16th-century built temple), Wat Si Muang (16th-century temple), Patuxai (20th-century built war monument/triumphal arc in downtown).

Other popular attractions in Vientiane or in close proximity to the city include the Buddha Park (1958-opened, with numerous Buddhist and Hindu sculptures), Lao National Museum (1925-built during French colonial rule as the governor's residence), Kaysone Phomvihane Museum (1995-opened), the That Dam stupa, the Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan (16th-century Buddhist monastery), Wat Sri Chomphu Ong Tue (16th-century temple), Wat Si Saket (19th-century temple), Wat Sok Pa Luang (temple), Settha Palace Hotel (1932-opened boutique hotel), Talat Sao (two-story-high covered market), the Sanjiang Market.

The city is served by the Wattay Airport, with regularly scheduled flights connecting to destinations in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Myanmar (Yangon), Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang), South Korea (Busan, Incheon-Seul, Cheongju), Japan, China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Haikou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Kunming, Nanning, Lanzhou, Xian, Jinghong, Wenzhou), and Singapore. Lao Airlines (the country's national carrier) operates regular international and domestic flights. Thailand's Udon Thani Airport is ~55 mi/90 km to the south.
