Vieques Island (officially Isla de Vieques) is an island-municipality in Puerto Rico (USA unincorporated territory) in northeastern Caribbean Sea, part of the so called Spanish Virgin Islands. The island covers a total area of approx 348 km2 (134 mi2) and has population around 10,000.
The island is served by Antonio Rivera Rodriguez Airport, with domestic flights connecting to Ceiba, San Juan, Culebra Island.
Most cruise ships to Vieques Island anchor off Esperanza (port town on the southern coast) and transport their passengers to Esperanza Beach near the ship's tender boats.
Ferries (from Ceiba/Fajardo, eastern Puerto Rico Island) and larger cruise vessels stop at Isabel Segunda (port town/Vieques' largest settlement) on the northern coast. The passenger ferry service runs several times per day and is provided by ATM (Autoridad de Transporte Maritimo).
Isla de Vieques is approx 13 km (8 mi) east of mainland Puerto Rico. The island has length 34 km (21 mi) and width 6 km (4 mi). Its largest towns are Esperanza (central-north coast, port locode AQESP) and Isabel Segunda (aka Isabel II/ferry port) - on the southern coast.
Vieques is also nicknamed "Isla Nena" ("Little Girl Island"), considered as the little sister to Puerto Rico Island. Its British name (during colonial times) was "Crab Island". Vieques is best-known worldwide as the site of several protests against the US Navy's use of the island as a testing ground and bombing range. As result, the Navy left in 2003. The former navy base is currently a wildlife refuge with numerous beaches - often ranked among the top Caribbean beaches for their white sands and azure-colored waters.
