Vis Island (Croatia) is located in central Adriatic Sea, and is the farthest inhabited island off mainland Croatia. Its total population is around 4,000. In late-19th - early-20th centuris, Vis had a thriving fishing industry, but its current economy is based on tourism and agriculture.

The island's total area is approx 90 km2 (35 mi2), with highest elevation point (Hum) 587 m (1926 ft). The two largest settlements are the towns Vis (on the eastern coast) and Komiza (on the western coast). Komiza and Vis are also seats of autonomous municipalities that cover the whole island plus some nearby small isles.
