Wachau Valley is an Austrian landscape formed by Danube River. It is one of the most notable tourist destinations in Lower Austria (state), locatecd midway between Krems and Melk. Valley's length is approx 40 km (25 ml) and its best-known travel destination is Durnstein - where King Richard I of England (The Lion-Heart / 1157-1199) was held captive by Duke Leopold V (The Virtuous / 1157-1194). The riverside scenery features Benedectine Abbeys (monasteries like Gottweig and Melk), ruins and castles combined with picturesque villages, small towns and vineyards.

In December 2000, Wachau Valley was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site ("Wachau Cultural Landscape") for its agricultural and architectural history, with over 5000 historical monuments.
