Through the city runs the Kinokawa River. In downtown (on Mt Torafusu) is the Wakayama Castle (part of the central park) which is a concrete replica of the original castle (destroyed during the US air raids at the end of WW2 / 1939-1945). Other tourist attractions include the shrines Kamayama, Hinokuma, Kunikakasu and Kishu Tosho-gu, Kimiidera Temple, Wakayama Marina City (beach resort district). The city is also well known for having one of Japan's Melody Roads that produce sounds (via vibrations) while driving on the grooves cut into the pavement.
Port Wakayama (locode JPWAK) serves cargo ships as well as regularly scheduled ferries - linking with Tokushima (via Nankai Ferry service) via 8 daily crossings (travel time 2 hours).
