Wijk bij Duurstede is a Kromme Rijn/Lek River (Rhine River) cruise port and town in The Netherlands' Utrecht Province, with population around 25,000. The closest to Duurstede large river port cities are Utrecht and Amersfoort (22 km / 14 mi) and Amsterdam (64 km / 40 mi). Duurstede has a harbor port that lies on 4 major waterways - Nederrijn (Lower Rhine River), Lek River, Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal (Amsterdam-Rhine Canal) and Kromme Rijn (Crooked Rhine).
The town's name (translated "Neighbourhood by Duurstede") signifies the nearby Duurstede Castle (aka Dorestad) which was the residence of the Utrecht's bishops. During the Carolingian Empire (9th century), Dorestad was an important medieval emporium (trade settlement) - right until it was first pillaged by the Vikings in 834 and then captured by the Danes in 850.
Today, in Wijk bij Duurstede is the world's only drive-through windmill (Rijn en Lek, 1659-built) with a round stone upper gate. The town is also popular among tourists for De Grote of Johannes de Doperkerk (14th-century pseudo-basilica) built with a flat roof tower because the bishop lacked the money needed for the spire. The town was granted city rights in the 14th century (1300 AD).
Near Wijk bij Duurstede are located several castles (Duurstede, Groenesteyn, Hindersteyn, Leeuwenburg, Lunenburg, Rhijnestein, Sandenburg, Walenburg, Weerdesteyn, Zuilenburg). The town has 74 rijksmonumenten (listed national monuments). Museum Dorestad is dedicated to the town's history and Dorestad's archaeological excavations. Gravenbol is a nature park/recreation area on Nederrijn River (near Duurstede).
As cruise port, Wijk bij Duurstede was included in the 2021 schedule of the German tour travel company Phoenix Reisen with the riverboat Viola. Next table shows the 8-night itinerary roundtrip from Bonn.
