Willis Island is the only permanently inhabited island in Coral Sea Islands (external territory of Australia), located in Coral Sea and beyond Great Barrier Reef. The island is approx 450 km (280 ml) east of Cairns (Queensland Australia). It is the southernmost of the three Willis Isles.

The island has length 500 m (1600 ft), with 150 m (490 ft), land area 7,7 hectares (19 acres) and highest elevation 9 m (30 ft) above sea level. Here is based an Australian meteo station staffed with 4 personnel. The weather monitoring station was opened in 1921 and has radio transmitter to provide cyclone warning service.

In February 2011, the eye of Cyclone Yasi moved over Willis Island as Category 5 storm. Station's staff was evacuated a day early. The wind reached speeds of 185 kph (115 mph). The cyclone was so strong that even altered the shape of the island and cleared much of its vegetation.
