Windsor is a Detroit River (Great Lakes) cruise port and city in Canada's Ontario province (Essex County) with population around 220,000 (metro around 280,000). Windsor is located on the river's south bank and directly across from Detroit (MI USA). Windsor is Canada's southernmost city and Southwestern Ontario's 3rd-largest by population (after London and Kitchener). Windsor and Detroit are linked with the Ambassador Bridge (1929-opened, tolled suspension bridge, length 1,43 mi/2,5 km, currently the busiest by annual traffic commercial Canada-USA border crossing point).
The first European settlement (la Petite Cote, later renamed to La Cote de Misere) was established by French colonists in the mid-18th century and in the late-18th century (following the American Revolution) was renamed to "Sandwich Town" and later "Windsor" - after Windsor UK (Berkshire England). Windsor ON became village in 1854, town in 1858, and city in 1892.
Current-day city's economy is based on automobile manufacturing (FCA Canada assembly plant, Ford Motor Company engine plants, smaller auto parts manufacturers), tourism (Caesars Windsor Casino, riverfront parks, restaurants, hotels, vineyards and wine tours), education, employment services (Sutherland Global Canada). pharmaceuticals, modern technologies (alternative energy, IT services, software development), molds and plastic components (AP Plasman Corporation).
As cruise port, Windsor (Riverside Marina Dock) was included in the 2021 schedule of Hapag Lloyd Cruises with the ship Hanseatic Inspiration (2019-built).
