Woody Point is a port town in Bonne Bay and the cruise gateway to Gros Morne National Park, located on Newfoundland Island's western coast. Gros Morne covers a total area of approx 1805 km2 (697 mi2), ranking it Atlantic Canada's second-largest NP - surpassed only by Torngat Mountains NP (total area 9700 km2 / 3700 mi2).

Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne was established as "Park Reserve" in 1973, in 1987 was designated "UNESCO World Heritage Site" and in 2005 was designated as "National Park".

Western Brook Pond is a fresh-water narrow fjord with length around 30 km (19 mi). The fjord's water is extremely pure (ranked with the highest rating for water purity available for natural waterways). Pissing Mare Falls flow into the fjord.

The park's most notable animal is moose. Other common for the park wildlife are caribous, black bears, red and Arctic foxes, lynxes (wild cats), snowshoe hares, red squirrels, river otters, beavers. Marine wildlife is represented by harbour seals and whales (humpbacks, pilots minkes, fins).

Among the NP's most popular activities is hiking. Marked trails are about 20, located along the coast and also going into the park's interior. The longest trail (16 km / 10 mi) is the dayhike over Gros Morne Mountain. The park's interior can be accessed through a multi-day hike (called "Long Range Traverse") between Western Brook Pond and the mountain.

Woody Point NL cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Gros Morne NP anchor in Bonne Bay at the Woody Point anchorage. The picturesque bay is located on the Newfoundland Island's western side, separating Great Northern Peninsula (its largest peninsula) from the rest of the island. The bay is part of the National Park and has population around 7000.

Bonne Bay has two sections - Inner and Outer. The inner consists of two arms (one with wooded coves and beach landings). The outer consists of the entrance to the fjord. As recreation options from Woody Point, Bonne Bay offers Gros Morne National Park tours, Deer Lake (insectarium / living insects zoo), museums, seakayaking tours, boat tours, fishing trips, hiking and biking tours, water taxi rides.

The town of Woody Point encompasses 3 settlements - Curzon Village, Woody Point and Winterhouse Brook. The NL Route 431 (aka Bonne Bay Road) is a short highway serving the communities of Glenburnie, Birchy Head, Winterhouse Brook and Trout River.
