Wyndham is Kimberley region's northernmost town (Western Australia state), located approx 2210 km (1370 mi) northeast of Fremantle-Perth. With population under 1,000, today Wyndham is a port town split into two main parts - the harbour port (on Cambridge Gulf / the site of the original town) and the Three Mile (downtown/residential and shopping area).

The town is surrounded by 5 rivers - Durack, Pentecost, and King (to the south), Forrest (west) and Ord (north), which all emerge into Cambridge Gulf. The area was first visited by the Europeans in 1819. The settlement was established in 1886 (during the Halls Creek gold rush) on the Cambridge Gulf (Timor Sea). Town's founder was Sir John Forrest (1847-1918) - Australian explorer and Western Australia's first Premier. The original town was intended as East Kimberley's primary seaport and trading station as gold was founded in Halls Creek in 1887. The port was mainly used by ships bringing thousands of miners for Halls Creek's goldfields.

As the gold ended in 1888, the town started to decline. In 1913, to restart the local economy, the state's government started to construct Wyndham Meatworks (beef slaughter and processing factory). The project was interrupted by WW1 (1914-1918) and finally completed in 1919. The Meatworks was officially closed in 1985.

Current-day Wyndham has 2 schools (Catholic School and High School), a daycare centre, an outdoor leisure complex (swimming pool and recreational facilities), a museum, 2 hotels, a caravan park. Other best-known tourist attractions are The Big Crocodile (1987-built 18 m / 59 ft high statue) and the Boab Prison Tree (large hollow tree located on King River Road and near the Moochalabra Dam / town's water supply).

Wyndham Important Bird Area holds Australia's largest population of the endangered Gouldian finches (aka Lady Gouldian finch, Gould's finch, rainbow finch) - a colorful bird species native to Australia. Wyndham Airport is approx located 6 km (4 mi) southeast of downtown.

As cruise port, Wyndham was included in the 2019 schedule of the superyacht Le Laperouse - 2018-built (new ship) owned by the French company Ponant. During summer, the luxury mega-yacht was deployed in Western Australia and operating between homeports Broome WA and Darwin NT.
