Yueyang is an Yangtze River cruise port and city located on Dongting Lake's southern shores. The city is part of China's Hunan province (its northeastern part) and has population around 5,5 million.
Its most famous tourist attraction is Yueyang Tower. Yueyang Tower dating dates from the Three Kingdoms Period (220–280 AD). It was built by chief commander Lu Su (commanding the Wu forces) who was sent to this area to built fortifications and to train the local river fleet. The tower was constructed in a strategic location where Dongting Lake and Yangtze River join and from where the whole lake is visible. The tower was first called Ba Ling Tower (after Ba Ling city, located nearby). Yueyang Tower is one of the sout China's Three Great Towers - together with "Pavilion of Prince Teng" (located northwest of Nanchang) and the "Yellow Crane Tower" (located in Wuhan).
