Drotten ferry Review

Review of Drotten ferry

MS Drotten ferry (fka MS Gotland) is a Ro-Ro passenger vessel owned and operated by the Swedish ferry company DESTINATION GOTLAND. The ship has a max capacity of 1500 passengers and 500 cars (or 120 lorries). Like its sister MS Visby (launched 2002), the vessel was built in China (Guangzhou) and was launched in 2003. The ship currently operates on the ferry route Visby-Nynashamn (port to Oskarshamn and Vastervik) - crossing time 3 hours.

Several daily crossings from Oskarshamn connect to Gotland Island (Visby), Oland Island (Grankullaviken) and Bla Jungfrun Island (aka Blakulla - uninhabited island/nature park). Port Oskarshamn is a seaport in Kalmar County (southwest of Nynashamn), with a capacity to handle container carriers and bulk cargo ships (dry and wet). The port has total quay-length 2,7 km (1,7 mi), max depth/draft 11 m (36 ft), Ro-Ro terminal (serving roll-on / roll-off ships), gantry cranes, covered storage (warehouses), oil and chemical silos. In the port (harbor's southern side) is located Oskarshamnsvarvet Sweden AB - shipbuilding yard established in 1863. The shipyard has floating drydock, gantry crane, slipway, 318 m (1043 ft) long quay.

Cabins

As cruise ferry, Drotten has 115 cabins (112 passenger staterooms), all of which are air-conditioned and with en-suite bathrooms. The ferry company provides bed linens, towels, and toiletries. Drotten ferry Wiki

The ship is powered by four WARTSILA marine diesel engines (model 12V46C) with total power output 50,4 MW. Despite the name change in 2020, the ship's flag-state (registry) remained Sweden, keeping the old MMSI number (265871000).

MS Gotland ferry's new name honours the 1927-built passenger ship Drotten. The vessel was build at Oskarshamns Varv (Oskarshamn Shipyard / now Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet). It was delivered to Angfartygs AB Gotland (later renamed to Rederi AB Gotland / Angbatsbolaget Gotland / Rederi AB Gotland - the parent company of Destination Gotland AB) on October 19, 1927.

The cruiseferry's original name was assigned to DESTINATION GOTLAND's newbuild - the 2019-launched Thjelvar (now MS Gotland).
