Review of Movenpick MS Darakum
MS Movenpick Darakum ship was launched in 2008 and since then operates on Nile River cruises in Egypt. The premium riverboat features Moroccan interior design, top-quality service, 5-star hotel facilities and amenities.
The shipowner Movenpick Group (founded 1973, headquarters in Baar, Switzerland) is a joint venture hotel company owned by Movenpick Holding (66,7%) and Kingdom Holding Company (Saudi Arabia, 33,3%). Movenpick operates around 110 hotels, resorts, and Nile cruise ships.
MS Darakum's fleet mates (Movenpick-owned Nile cruisers) are SS Misr (steamship), Prince Abbas, Hamees, MS Sun Ray, MS Royal Lotus, MS Royal Lily, SB Feddya.
Cabins
MS Darakum has a total of 44 cabins (categories Standard and Superior) and 8 Suites. All staterooms are designed and furnished to the highest standards. Standard cabin amenities include either King-size (double bed) or two twins (single beds), premium bedding (fine 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, pillow menu), large wardrobe, flat LCD TV (satellite reception, on-demand movies), minibar, refrigerator, electronic safe box and 2 life jackets (in the closet), phone (shipboard connections only), hairdryer, bottled water (replenished daily), tea-coffee making facilities, en-suite bathroom (wood-paneled, fixed shower, bathtub, WC, single-sink vanity, bathrobes, slippers, premium toiletries), individually-controlled air-conditioning, evening turndown service.
The Suites additionally feature a separate lounge/seating area. Senior Suites have a second bathroom.
- (Lower Deck) Main Restaurant, Standard and Superior cabins (size 20 m2 / 215 ft2) with smaller square windows that cannot be opened. These cabins are offered for sole occupancy with no single supplement but the availability is limited.
- (Main Deck) Light and airy glass-panelled Reception. All Standard and Superior cabins from the Main Deck and above feature large picture-windows with a panel that can be opened.
- (Upper Deck) Senior Suites (size 40 m2 / 430 ft2), forward-facing Panorama Suites (size 34 m2 / 365 ft2), Rear Sun Deck, Fitness Room (mini-gym), Onboard Shop
- (Top Deck) 2x Senior Suites (size 34 m2 / 365 ft2), Main Bar, Lower Sun Deck
- (Sun Deck) Open-Air Bar, Plunge Pool, sofas, armchairs, and loungers.
Shipboard facilities
MS Darakum offers various dining and entertainment options. Main Dining Room Restaurant (Lower Deck) offers buffet-style themed food (breakfast-lunch-dinner buffets) in addition to the waiter-served lunches and dinners. Cooking lessons and wine tastings are offered at extra cost. The Lounge Bar offers Afternoon Tea service, premium cocktails, board games, daily lectures, live evening entertainment (shows, dancing, themed parties). Sun Deck Bar serves the sunbathing area (furnished with loungers by the swimming pool) and the shaded seating area.
More active cruisers will appreciate the Gym (fitted with modern fitness equipment). Ship's Gift Shop sells mainly travel essentials, brand jewellery, hand-made Egyptian souvenirs. Onboard laundry service costs extra.
Movenpick Nile Cruise Itineraries
MS Darakum's Nile River itineraries are between homeports Luxor and Aswan, as well as between Luxor/Aswan and Cairo (included domestic flight transfers. Itinerary lengths vary between 4-day (Luxor to Aswan), 3-day (Aswan to Luxor), 7-day (roundtrip from Luxor), 9-day (Luxor to Cairo), 11-day (Cairo to Luxor), 12-day (Aswan to Cairo) and 14-day (Cairo to Aswan). Cruise departures are on Mondays (from Luxor) and on Fridays (from Aswan).
