Spirit of Tasmania 2 ferry Review
Review of Spirit of Tasmania 2 ferry
MS Spirit of Tasmania II ferry is a Ro-Pax passenger vessel operated by the German company TT-LINE Tasmania. The ship has a max capacity of 1400 passengers and 500 cars plus 110 trucks (trailers). The vessel was launched in 1998 and currently operates on the Victoria (Australia)-Tasmania ferry route Melbourne-Devonport (the Bass Strait crossing time 9-11 hours).
Curiously, for three years (2003 through 2006), the fleet also included the Spirit of Tasmania III ship (IMO 9086590) which now sails as Mega Express Four (Italy-flagged) for Corsica-Sardinia Ferries. The 1995-built (as Superfast II) Spirit of Tasmania 3 joined the TT-Line Company's fleet on September 30, 2003, and was deployed on the new route Devonport-Sydney NSW, starting on January 15, 2004. The service was terminated in August 2006. Spirit of Tasmania 3 was acquired from Superfast Ferries (in July 2003, reportedly for AUD 103 M) and was owned by TT-Line in the period 2003-2006. In July 2006 (on Jul 17th) the vessel was sold to Corsica Ferries for EUR 65 million (AUD 111 M).

Spirit of Tasmania 2 ferry Wiki
The vessel was operated under the names "Superfast III" (1998-2002, by SUPERFAST FERRIES) and "Spirit of Tasmania II" (since 2002 by TT-LINE Tasmania). The ship entered service on March 16, 1998, and was deployed on the Greece-Italy route Patras-Bari (via Igoumenitsa). In March 2002, Superfast Ferries (a subsidiary of Attica Holdings) sold the vessel to TT-LINE. Drydock refurbished (at Neorion shipyard on Syros Island) and renamed "Spirit of Tasmania II", the cruise ferry started the Melbourne-Devonport service for TT-LINE on September 1 (inaugural cruise).
The cruise ship is the second in a 2-unit series built for Superfast Ferries built in Turku Finland (at Kvaerner Masa-Yards), with sistership Superfast IV (Spirit of Tasmania 1). In 1995, for the Patras-Ancona service, Superfast Ferries launched the sisterships Superfast I (now Skania) and Superfast II (now Mega Express 4).
Ship's extensive drydock refurbishment in 2014 was in Sydney NSW (at Captain Cook Graving Dock, Garden Island) and cost TT-LINE Tasmania USD 10 million (GBP 7,5 million). The project was conducted by Trimline (UK company) via local contractors and sub-contractors. During the overhaul were completely remodeled and upgraded the four passenger decks (all cabins and public areas) and were added two cinemas, self-service restaurant (TMK), 3 new bars, family play area, retail shop.
On December 8, 2017, TT-LINE Tasmania announced that the existing ferries will be replaced with two newbuilds launched in 2021 and 2022. In January 2018 was selected Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Flensburg, Germany) as a shipbuilder. In May 2018, TT-LINE Company signed EUR 438 million shipbuilding order for the 2 new LNG-powered cruise ferries. Each ship has length 212 m and capacity 1800 passengers and 600 cars. The new ferries will increase the company's capacity by 43% (passengers) and 39% (freight).
Ship technology
Ship's powerplant includes four SULZER marine diesel engines (model 16ZA40S, V16 turbo-charged) with combined power output 42,2 MW. At sea, the power is generated from 2 shaft generators attached to the main engines. In port, the power (approx 1,5 MW) is generated from 3 diesel gen sets.
Ship's propulsion is based on two reduction gearboxes (510 / 147 rpm), connected with driveshafts with controllable-pitch propellers. The liner has 3 thrusters (fixed, in the hull) - 2 at the bow (forward) and 1 stern (aft).
The vessel has 2 stabilizers (forward-midship located retractable fins) made by Blohm+Voss. Each stabilizer has length 8 m (26 ft) and width 0,6 m (2 ft). Navigation is via 2 semi-balanced rudders (electric-hydraulic).
The ship's fuel capacity is 1222 m3, allowing once per week bunkering. Freshwater capacity is 570 tons.
The vessel is equipped with 2 marine evacuation systems, a total of 2266 life jackets (plus 140 for kids), 18 life rings, 4 motorized lifeboats (capacity 150 each), 28 liferafts (combined capacity 1310 people), 1 motorized rescue boat (for 6) and 1 work boat (for 4). Comm equipment includes satellite transponders.
Vessel dimensions also include:
- bridge wing to bow distance 32,5 m (107 ft)
- bridge wing to stern distance 162 m (531 ft)
- waterline to bridge wing height 22,5 m (74 ft)
- waterline to mast-top height 39 m (128 ft)
- waterline to funnel-top height 37 m (121 ft)
- draft 6,5 m (22 ft)
